Poetry Assignment

Learning Context:

Second grade students are learning about weather.  They are almost finished with the unit and will be working with partners to complete an acrostic poem.

Plan:

We are learning about weather and have made a poster of weather words, and other words we might need, in ABC order to help start each line.

Review information the students learned during the unit and ask students to pick a weather topic they found interesting.

Mini-Lesson:

● Call the class over to group time to read Silver Seeds.

●After reading the first poem ask the students what they notice about the page and discuss the type of poem, how the author used the poem to describe the word that was going down the page.

●Then read other poems from the book and have students analyze the acrostic poetry.  Make sure they see examples of one word and especially phrases and sentence acrostics.

●I will write and show students an example of making an acrostic poem using W-A-T-E-R and then we make an acrostic poem using

 W-E-A-T-H-E-R whole class.

Day 2

●Then working in groups of four or five, students will write acrostic of the word W-E-A-T-H-E-R  .

●Students should be ready to write an acrostic poem with partners now.

●Each student will pick a topic to write about for their acrostic poem, and then do some extended research on the topic in partners.

●As the students complete the poem they are edited by the teacher

●Then in the computer lab the poems will be  completed using word processing and clip art added, as well as font size and type changed to enhance the poem.

Weather is never predictable and always changing.  You never really know what is going to happen.  That is why I love it.

We have discovered many things about weather over the past few weeks.  Some things you already knew and some you have just learned.

You are invited to create an acrostic poem to explain your favorite weather topic.

Make sure that you tell me at least 2 important facts about the topic you pick.

Work with your partner to come up with phrases that tell about your chosen topic.

You may want to use Silver Seeds or the poem we created in class for some ideas.
